This week it was announced that Droogbak – a historic late-nineteenth-century state-listed building, which has been converted into a modern office space – has won the Archello ‘Public Vote’ Award, in the category of ‘Office Building of the Year’.
Where Innovation Meets Heritage
Sited within a five-minute walk from Amsterdam’s Central Train Station, Droogbak, as a building, has seen various iterations of its programme. The goal of the recent transformation was to modernise and open up the interior spaces of the building; most notably, by restoring its massive interior atrium converted to the dynamic heart of the premises.
The design of the new office space included not just physical upgrades, such as enhancing indoor temperature control and soundproofing, but also consciously fostering a work culture centred on casual meetings and social connections—as evidenced by the playful routes of new circulation, as well as areas for serendipitous communication and collaboration.
Archello is one of the world’s largest digital platforms for architecture. Its annual award recognises outstanding design work across the globe. The Archello Awards saw more than 1000 entries, to this year’s award.
