Many companies today are questioning the necessity of a statuesque and monumental building. While it was once considered important for a building to impress, it is now sometimes seen as an inhibition for organisations to thrive. Among the younger generation, the dominant character of a grand building can be at odds with their desire for freedom and possibilities.
The value of a beautiful monument lies in the willingness to settle down in it.
At Fokkema & Partners, we believe that a more rigorous approach is needed to maintain the allure and contemporaneity of historical buildings. Renovating and modernising these buildings alone is not enough. A contemporary layer must be added to bridge the past and future, thus transforming the existing structure in unexpected ways. Although this may be challenging for listed buildings, we are not afraid to challenge the status quo by modifying what may seem untouchable. We can put beautiful ornaments in a new perspective by adding this innovative layer.
The project featured on the next page serves as a prime example of how innovation and heritage can blend harmoniously, in turn creating spaces that allow communities to thrive. At the core of this project lies the belief that we can find ways to preserve the beauty and importance of historical buildings while also incorporating novel ideas and approaches that cater to the needs of modern-day society. This balance is essential in ensuring that our cities continue to evolve whilst still retaining their unique character. By bringing together the best of both worlds, we can create spaces that honour the past, support the present, and inspire the future.
